How to Satisfy Picky Eaters

Nov 20, 2016 | Diet|Dining|Food|Julington Creek Fish Camp|North Beach Fish Camp

You might love the broiled oysters with horseradish bacon cream, but your picky kids or significant other probably thinks otherwise. Picky eaters are hard to pin down, but there are a few foods that can make just about anyone happy, and they happen to be on Julington Creek Fish Camp’s menu! Don’t hesitate to bring your pickiest dinner dates in, because we’ve got it covered.

For the Little Ones

Tip #1: Don’t force it

Remember when your parents forced you to clean your plate or eat all of your veggies before leaving the dinner table? When you demand your kids to eat certain foods, it attaches a negative connotation. Put the food in front of your little boy or girl, and let them make their choice. They’ll eventually give in because they’re hungry.

Tip #2: Ignore the clock

It doesn’t really matter if your child eats three full meals every day exactly when they should, as long as they get a portion of all the food groups. When a strict schedule is attached to eating, your child may view it as a chore.

Tip #3: Offer Choices

Picky eaters are often hung up on a power struggle rather than the actual food itself. When you appear to put them in charge of their meal, they’ll feel more in control. For example, ask what color plate they’d like. They’re answer doesn’t matter, but it’ll decrease the chance of their need for control later in the meal.

Tip #4: Become a master of disguise

Plenty of parents think of feeding their kids veggies and just laugh. Green is good, but it’s hard to sell children on that. Use the power of a good sauce or recipe to hide the healthy stuff. From thinly sliced vegetables in teriyaki sauce to zucchini brownies, the little ones will never know.

Plenty of kids have a seafood mental block, and we get that. We opened the Fish Camps for families, so we created a kids menu to make everyone happy! If your son or daughter is a fan of fish, we have options for them. But if their diets are a little less sophisticated, we’re confident they’ll be satisfied with the typical American favorites. Check out our kids menu:

-Fried Shrimp with French Fries

-Fish Strips with French Fries

-Fried Chicken Tenders with French Fries

-Grilled Cheese with French Fries

For the Grown-Ups

If you’re an adventurous eater, it’s often hard to find restaurants that make your finicky friend happy. You’re in luck, because Julington Creek Fish Camp had even the pickiest eaters in mind when we curated our menu! Typically, adults are a bit more adventurous than the little ones, and our entree options reflect that. Here are a few of our favorites:

-Pan Fried Fish Sandwich with French Fries and Turnip Slaw

Here’s why: Hello…it’s fried! Most picky eaters are perfectly happy with a fried piece of meat, starch, whatever.

-Baja Style Tacos with Cod, Salsa Fresca and Adobe Sour Cream

Here’s why: It’s pretty dang difficult to find someone who doesn’t like tacos, especially when they’re filled with a fresh, mild fish.

-Buttermilk Pan Fried Chicken with Grits, Collard Greens and Tasso Ham Gravy

Here’s why: The collard greens might be a push, but you’re safe with the fried chicken, creamy carbs and yummy gravy. Again…fried.

-Top Sirloin Steak with Brandy Peppercorn Demi, Mixed Greens and Fries

Here’s why: The majority of picky eaters still enjoy their fair share of meat, and steak is typically on the top of their list! A traditional cut of meat served with safe sides can’t be beat.

See…we can handle it. We know you’ll be happy with the shrimp and grits or crab cakes, and they can enjoy some foods in their comfort zone. Whether it’s little kids or adults with a mental block, we have entrees for just about everyone.
